This morning I'm aching all over
Can't eat, can't sleep, can't rest
Oh I need to go see a doctor
For this achin' down deep in my chest
Is there a cure
For the common Heartache
An unknown prescription
Any loser can take
I'd be the first to become addicted
If there's a cure
For the common heartache
I know right where I got it
This sickness that's got me laid up
I don't have the strength now to fight it
This old condition called love
Is there a cure
For the common Heartache
An unknown prescription
Any loser can take
I'd be the first to become addicted
If there's a cure
For the common heartache
Is there a cure
For the Common Heartache
She sat on top of one of the many mounds of dirt that made up Jeff's yard with Liger's head in her lap scratching behind the dog's ears hoping that she didn't come across any fleas. Her mind was a couple miles away in a two story house with a cute little flowerbed running the length of the front of the house and some rose bushes on the sides because they were her favorite. Her mind should be on the dinner she was supposed to be getting on the table for Jeff when he came home, but instead it was focused on long brown waves and big brown eyes pleading with her not to turn and leave.
But turn she had and leave she had as well, only every second since then she wondered why it hurt so badly that she wasn't there. Why was it that at night she laid in bed wondering when she was going to fall asleep until she watched the sun come up and wearily got out of bed knowing that sleep wouldn't be coming that night? Often her thoughts would turn to some past memory of a time when at least SHE thought that they were happy.
Staring unseeing towards the house she remembered a day after Matt had been gone for an unusually long period of time. She hadn't been expecting him 'til the next day and had decided to take a long luxurious bubble bath in their oversized old-fashioned bath tub. The bathroom was filled with her favorite rose scented candles and a CD with all the songs that reminded her of him was playing on the CD player. Her eyes were closed and he head rested on the little pillow Matt had bought her so that her neck wouldn't hurt when she soaked.
She'd been laying there singing along with the music when she felt someone get in with her. The tub hadn't really been made for two, but Matt never seemed to mind saying being extra close to her was never a bad thing. Shocked she'd opened her to find those laughing eyes of her heart's love looking down at her. She never had found out why or how he'd managed to come home early, but then they'd found much better things to do then talk. When the sun rose in the wee hours of the next day they were still making love… or should she say making love again.
Letting her head drop she buried her face in Liger's fur hoping that they would dry the tears as the sobs racked her body. Feeling a hand on her shoulder she looked up to see watery hazel eyes staring back at her. "I can't stand ta see you like this no more. Why doncha jus go see him and y'all work things out. Ya know he didn' mean ta hurt ya."
"And what about you?" she asked quietly staring deeply into the eyes of her best friend trying to see his heart. Easily Jeff shrugged before answering. "I love ya like a sister. I know that and you know that, but if Matty can't see that then well… I'll just have to take a back seat for now. He'll come 'round. But I can't stand ta see you so damn heartbroken no more. Ya're makin' yourself sick. You don' sleep, ya don' eat, the neighbors say when I'm gone you jus sit out here an stare off into space alla time. I ain't worth alla this."
Angelique smiled softly shaking her head. "The fact that you'd say that just proves you are wrong. I ain't abandoning our friendship because Matt doesn't believe in me." Jeff sighed and shook his head. "Please Angelique I am begging you. If'n you don' go to him there ain't gonna be nothin left of him. He's dyin' inside without you I need my brother and I know you'll find a way to convince him that you and me's jus friends. Please!"
Closing her eyes she tried to think of all the reasons not to go, but her heart over rode them all giving her the only reason it had for wanting her to go. She loved him and after all what more did she need? Taking a deep breath she nodded slightly shaking her head at the smile that spread across Jeff's face. Jumping up he pulled her to her feet and drug her though the yard to the car before she could change her mind.
The short ride to Matt's was nerve wracking for her. She had no clue what to say, what she would do once she got there, or even if Matt really did want her there. When Jeff pulled into the driveway and stopped the car, she sat there for a bit not moving as she stared at the house. So many memories lay inside those walls. Nervously she got out saying bye to Jeff and made her way to the front door where she let herself in with the key Matt had hidden behind the gargoyle on the corner of the porch.
Carefully she made her way inside, not uttering a word as it seemed wrong to disturb the peacefulness of the house. As if being led by some invisible force she made her way up the stairs and back to their bedroom where she found him laying on his stomach with one knee pulled up curling him into a semi-circle. For a long while she just stood there watching him sleep thinking how peaceful he looked and wishing she could grant him that same state to carry over in his waking hours.
Finally she couldn't remain so far away from him anymore and made her way to the bed where she saw at his side. Lifting a hand she brushed back his hair smiling softly at the sight of his face. They always say distance makes the heart grow fonder and maybe they are right, because it seemed to her that she'd never loved him more than she did at that moment. Somewhere in the back of her brain there remained a struggle raging between her friendship with Jeff and her love for Matt and her heart still ached because of the conflict, but her soul sang with the rightness of being there in that house with that man. It simply was the place where she belonged and anything else would have to wait til tomorrow to be settled.
The End… well not quite but for now yes :-)
