Chapter Eight
Going Home

Shawn sat in a chair watching Kevin pace back and forth in front of him, still screaming at him. Shawn had long ago stopped listening, because it wasn't as if it mattered if he heard him or not. The child had been lost and Shawn was to blame, but for some reason that didn't really seem to be bothering him. His mind was wandering back to a time long ago when he was still mortal and foolish enough to think that there was something better beyond his brothers' farm.

The truth was that that there was nothing better in the world. Being surrounded by people that love you and want only the best for you, a smart man would not want anything more in the world. Shawn though had never been accused of being a smart man. Now he was surrounded by people that didn't understand him and only wanted him around because he was pretty. Even his mate only cared that he would be beautiful forever, something that troubled Shawn greatly. Longevity that was there other need of him, he kept them alive. Long ago most of them should have been dead except the babe Lucian and Mike… Kevin's new… mortal who was only about 23 years old. No one quite knew about Paul, but then none of them really cared when he would live or die not even Shawn these days. All he seemed to be able to think of now was… an old farmhouse filled with the scent of Glenn's wife's bread, corn fields surrounding the green grass of the homestead where the dogs and puppies frolicked and played, and fresh laundry drying on the line as the babies played with the other animals in the barn and the pens.

It all seemed so far away and yet since this afternoon it suddenly all felt so within reach. "SHAWN ARE YOU FUCKING LISTENING TO ME!" Kevin roared and slowly Shawn looked up. "Kevin I heard you the first time. I heard you the second time, but after 3 hours NO I did not hear you." Standing Shawn glared up at the bigger man. "You know what KEV? Frankly I could give two shits that they have the kid. It's what you wanted anyway although unlike you I hope to God they find some way of keeping him from you because you have no fucking idea what you're messing with there. As for the amulets… well honey they weren't yours either so ya win some ya lose some."

Growling deep in his throat Kevin wrapped his massive hand around Shawn's throat squeezing tight as he lifted him up. Shawn though looked at him unfazed. He knew that this was the point where he was supposed to beg for his life, but some how it just didn't seem important anymore putting on an actu of fearing for his live when they all knew that Kevin couldn't choke him to death. After all he already WAS dead for God's sake. Calmly Shawn stared at Kevin until suddenly the bigger man released him screaming madly, but Shawn just smiled sweetly and walked away as the others scurried to Kevin's side.

Fifteen minutes later Scott stormed into Kevin's room with Paul close behind. "WHATEVER YOU DID CHICO UNDO IT!" Scott ordered and Shawn just snorted throwing the last of his important things into the suitcase before closing it. "Don't worry your pretty little head about it, CHICO," Shawn drawled, "your big bad Pappa will be just fine in a few hours. Once I am far enough away that is."

Paul's eyes narrowed as Scott cocked his head confused. "What do you mean far enough away Shawn?" Paul growled dangerously. Lifting his bag and looping it over his shoulder Shawn picked up his other suitcase and turned sighing. "I'm done Paul," he said frankly. "I am done being your eye candy and their life force. I am done catering to some evil little brat that should be killed not worshipped. I am done pretending to care about the wants and needs of people that couldn't give TWO FUCKS about a vampire WHORE." When the two men paled slightly Shawn chuckled softly. "Ya'll are so stupid. I am a fucking vampire. I have a great many talents and listening to the thoughts of you idiots is the least of them. Paul you don't love me. You don't understand me and you aren't even faithful. Now I realize that vampires aren't the most monogamous race of beings, but baby… you give whore a WHOLE NEW MEANING!"

When Paul suddenly dropped to the ground screaming and holding his crotch Scott decided that it was wiser to let Shawn go and listen to Kevin bitch at him later than risk whatever was going on. Shawn snorted as Scott stepped aside letting him pass and eyed the man as he left. "That is probably the only smart thing you have done since I met you Scott."

Making his way through the living room where Mike was tending to the now crying Kevin, Shawn ignored his glares and pretended that Lucian wasn't creeping him out as he watched him leave. Determined though Shawn ignored him as well as he stored his bags in the side compartments on his motorcycle then brought the beast to life roaring off. He wasn't sure where his brothers were and was even less sure of the reception once he found them. After all it had been a long time since he left them and despite their meeting earlier that day he was sure that Marcus had to be harboring some ill will at the shape Shawn had left him in.

"Do you really think they will still love you?" Shawn heard inside his head. Speeding up his bike he didn't even try to tell himself it was anything other than Lucian. "You're nothing but an old bitch now. You're washed up. You're nothing." The bike slowed slightly but Shawn shook his head and kept going gritting his teeth. "And you are an evil little baby and I don't have to listen to you anymore." Shawn blocked the baby and rode on. If there was anything good he still trusted in this world it was his brother's love for him. No matter how much time it took. He knew they would eventually forgive him and welcome him back into the family.
