Notes: I love Joss as much as the next girl who grew up in the 90s. Dollhouse hasn't changed that; I am not completely naive on the workings of networks. I am sure it is a compliment for a tv show to inspire such debate. It was with something akin to morbid curiosity that I watched the episodes, not willing to pass judgement without seeing if a show that essentially circulates around slavery and prostitution would at least offer up some form of defense. Whilst I won't say I am entirely satisfied, or even remotely comfortable with the major themes, they did go some way to addressing the moral ambiguities that they raised, and yes, that curiosity will probably take me through to the next season.
In that respect, Dollhouse is then the only show that I will watch, not for the enjoyment, but for academic intrigue. It's been a few years since I studied ethics and philosophy, but so many of the dilemmas we addressed surface over and over thought the season. The Dollhouse has managed to surface in me the quixotic feelings of disdain and respect that made writing SGM such an interesting project. I respect that the writers were attempting to do in addressing so many moral questions, but ultimately feel that the tone of the show did not treat the topics with the level of delicacy that was really required.
SGM was an attempt at addressing some of the issues I felt that were not properly dealt with. There were moments when watching that anticipation would spike; finally we were going to get some of the most disturbing issues addressed, only for the show to settle back into the same internal drama that allowed little room for the subtitles of moral philosophy to be tenderly cultivated. Perhaps I am being unfair, and perhaps next season we will get the answers I am not just hoping for, but expecting.
Until then, we have Jared and Jensen.
Why is Jensen the Doll? The simple answer is that he has a wider range of characters I could exploit for my wicked purposes :D The simpler answer is that I have a thing for Jared in uniform.
Though the story is Jared's, Jensen was such an interesting character to write. In the first draft, his reasons for becoming an Active were hazy. In the final version, the theme that runs so predominantly through the series was also the best way of maneuvering him into position. The latest statistics to come from the FBI state that 1 in 8 men are the victims of sexual assault at some point in their life; Less than a third of that number are reported. RAINN associate shame as one of the main reasons for this low number of reported assaults, and it wound up being the main motivation for many of Jensen's decisions.
Jared's character was no less interesting for me to play with, but at the same time, I found his motivations much harder to balance. He's very judgmental of the people who use the service, but at the same time his own understanding of right and wrong didn't always fall in line with what he was expected to do. It was always important to me that he be human; that he have his scruples, and his moments of weakness. All of his actions were made with the best intentions, but the ultimate rightness or wrongness of those actions is hopefully as ambiguous as was intended.
Whether I succeeded or failed in addressing the issues I had with Dollhouse is moot. I don't think one can ever truly address such a complex collection of issues. Not with a hundred thousand words, and ten Joss Whedons.
