Notes: Russell Crowe will be playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in Ridley Scott's new movie 'Nottingham' and the idea of Robin Hood being played by Sean Bean has been thrown about a fair bit. I love the idea of Sean as Robin.
Additional Note: As we all know Russell Crowe ended up playing Robin Hood and Bean was not in the movie... But just pretend ok?
Background Note: Historically Sir Robert of Tornham was a skilled and trusted soldier, made Sheriff of Cyprus by King Richard (Coeur de Lion) when the King left the recently conquered Cyprus for Acre. Tornham quelled an uprising in Cyprus but it became clear to Richard that keeping the island would prove costly for him. The King sold the island twice, first to the Templars, and later to Guy de Lusignan. At Richard's request Tornham returned to England to serve as Sheriff of Nottingham, a city second in size only to London.
According to the movie blurb Nottingham is in crisis. There's a Norman/Saxon divide, and a mysterious hooded outlaw causing trouble. Sir Guy of Gisbourne suspects this man, known as Robin Hood, is the former Sir Robin of Locksley, a Nobleman who was outlawed for defending a man accused of killing one of the King's deer.
